Uyghur cuisine in Melbourne CBD – a rare find!

(the following facts may not be 100% accurate as I am only human, please leave comments to point out my errors)

Uyghur food 维吾尔菜 (Uyghur Yemekliri) is (according to wikipedia) characterized by mutton, beef, camel, chicken, goose, carrots, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, celery, various dairy foods, and fruits – no pork thank you. Uyghur people are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia, it is without a doubt a culture with Turkish and the Islamic influences.

The Uyghur cuisine it is very closely related to Xinjiang cuisine, in fact they kind of meant the same thing. Uyghur people lives in Xinjiang, so naturally their food became the signature cuisine of Xinjiang.

The Review

Behind QV in an unnoticeable lane-way –  Dolan Uyghur Food Heaven stands on the corner of Little Lonsdale and Hayward Lane.

I didn’t think I liked it much when I was there but I began to miss the clear noodles in chilli sauce and lamb skewers lately. It is not a restaurant where you expect to be thrilled by presentation or creativity, the key is that their dishes are simple and authentic (the ones I have tried at least). I saw their specialty noodles being quite popular, as well as the Spicy Chicken (大盤雞? ‘Big Dish Chicken’ is me translating it directly from Chinese) and lamb skewers, I have observed most of their diners ordering them. Oh! And homemade drinkable yoghurt (a bit like lasi) is placed in their little display-case fridge.

很難得能在市中心找到新疆餐館很是興奮!

夾在唐人街與QV之間非常不起眼的Little Lonsdale St/Hayward Lane轉角 – 一棟高高的大樓的底層就是刀郎的所在地.

一開始我並沒有覺得特別欣賞刀郎的菜餚, 主要的是因為習慣了多數餐館花哨的菜餚裝飾, 因而認為包裝可以認定’色香味’的質量; 然而刀郎的菜餚卻沒有啰嗦的修飾與包裝, 就像是飯店的裝潢也是格外的簡陋. 在我品嚐他們的小菜后我才領悟到在那樸素簡單的一碟小菜里有家常的味道, 會在享用後的幾天里回味它的味道與品嚐時的感覺. 在我與朋友點的幾道小菜中最令我難以忘懷的是烤羊肉串與拌涼粉 – 羊肉串香噴噴, 涼粉清涼爽口!
